Curriculum

Kindergarten class (4 1/2-5 1/2 years old)

Designed for kids who are new to the Chinese language. Through Chinese songs, games, arts & crafts and stories, kids are introduced to the Chinese phonetic alphabet, and they learn to count numbers and learn simple words such as names, family members, face and body parts, colors, weather, etc. in a fun learning environment.

Beginning class

  Level I:
Students learn Pinyin, spelling, and pronunciation of the  four tones of Mandarin Chinese. Students also learn to write simple Chinese characters and practice Chinese character calligraphy. Students learn to extend words into useful phrases. With assistance from the teacher, students learn how to create simple and basic sentences. This class also gives the children ability to understand and respond to daily conversation in Chinese. Students are introduced to Chinese festivals and customs.

  Level II:
This class continues the focus on learning and writing Chinese characters and pronouncing them correctly. Besides vocabulary learning, students also learn the proper way to form phrases and create sentences, improving listening comprehension, and daily conversational skills. Students learn more about Chinese festivals and customs.

Intermediate class

  Level III:
This class focuses on continually expanding students’ vocabularies as well as  introducing simple Chinese idioms. Students will perform story-telling, poetry readings, and engage in short essay writing as well as learn how to recognize synonyms, antonyms and different sentence patterns. Students are further introduced to Chinese cultures and customs.

  Level IV:
Students will continue to build upon their vocabulary base, with this class expanding into more advanced words, phrases, and sentence structures. This class focuses on reading and writing short essays, reciting poems and students creating their own poems. More cultural classes are included and students will explore Chinese culture and customs in more depth and are introduced to Chinese history and geography.

Advanced Class

  Level V:
Class focuses on building overall communication skills in listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. With a strong language foundation, students start to learn more about the history of the Chinese language and culture. At this level, students are encouraged to participate in speech and writing competitions as they are trained to make their own presentations, speeches and write longer essays. The lesson plans follow the standards of foreign language learning in five goal areas (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities) and three communicative models ( Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational). The Lesson topics deal with everyday life to current events. In this class students also learn Chinese typing.

High School Advanced and Credit Class  

Following the standards of foreign language learning in five goal areas (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities) and three communicative models ( Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational), this class focuses on advanced language and cultural study. In addition to strengthening students’ advanced abilities in reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension, this class further refines students’ understanding of Chinese culture and history, and explores cultural comparison between Eastern and Western society.

The curriculum is approved by the Huntington Beach Union High School District as a foreign language study course, and high school students can earn up to 40 units of Chinese language credit. The High School Advanced and Credit Class offers numerous benefits.
